It was a lovely beginning of term in the Dining Hall that was capped off with an even better weekend. The week started off with a decent menu. The presence of some type of non processed meat is always nice. The chicken Marsala on Friday night was decent until it became lunch on Saturday and most recently dinner on Sunday. Whoever had the bright idea to chop it up and reserve it assuming no one would realize well bravo. The biggest downfall of the week however was the breakfast. Not necessarily what was served but rather how much and how long it was served for. I am a big fan of the dining hall breakfast, always rising early in hopes of finding hash browns and possibly bacon. This however did not happen this week. I was instead greeted with empty pans of food at 7:20. Why is it that hot breakfast is now one third as long as it was my freshman year? It seems that every year the mealtimes get shorter and the ever watchful eye on those of us who “take too much food” becomes more stringent. Between the removal of the dishes that had some nutrition such as the salmon and the replacing them with freeze dried tilapia encrusted in red and green bread crumbs, the food itself has gone far down hill. Of all the things that could have been chosen to cut back the budget on why the dining hall and its already lacking food? Why couldn’t it be something unnecessary like mandating an art class? Everyone has to eat so why not cut spending somewhere else. As a hole the week was not out of the ordinary lots of pasta and corn based food and little if any none processed items. Maybe the coming weeks will have a new menu item of possibly an improved dish, I however tend to doubt it.

  1. The dining hall food has definitely gone down hill from our freshman year. I remember when they would serve the chocolate fudge cakes for dessert. They were the most amazing, overwhelming (in a good way) dessert the school ever had. Now, they only serve cheesecake and pumpkin pie for dessert. I miss going to lunch and grabbing the chocolate cake without any regrets because I knew I would burn off the extra calories in sports. That cake was well worth the money that was paid into ordering or making it, and I wish they would continue serving it.
I think one of the problems with the dining hall is not only the quality of the food, but also the variation. The menu repeats over and over in a two week cycle, so I always know what will be for lunch or dinner. The food at the dining hall is just like any other school, cheap, processed garbage, which we are forced to eat unless we want to starve. I agree that the school needs to spend more money on food and less money on unnecessary things. Food is very important and we deserve to be fed decently, not horribly.

  2. Alexander, I couldn't agree with you more. The dining hall has taken a turn for the worse in recent years. "Fish Friday" is just so appealing. I also love it when I come into the Dining Hall at 6:30pm after a late practice, and they are supposed to be "holding dinner". I didn't know the mystery meat stuck to the bottom of the pan and crushed up cereal was dinner. They close the grills so early, and sometimes don't even have them at all. Also, what's with the constant changing of opening and closing times? I used to go to breakfast (with you) at 6:45 in the morning. The next year, I had to go at 6:50. Last year, I found myself waiting at a table for ten minutes just so they could open it at 7am. Pure laziness. I'd like to end by commenting on the chicken burgers- they are much less appealing to me this year. Not only are the patties way too big for the buns, but the bun is this grainy wheat role that does not satisfy my taste. When I eat a chicken burger, I want a classic white bun. This lack of choice has left me angered and irritated at the Dining Hall's recent performances.

  3. This is pure genius. The entire statement about dining hall making little to no effort to successfully feed us. As I am sure you all are, I am counting down the days until I am finally reunited with my mothers home cooked meals and of course, take out food. However, I still have a couple more days at school, so the struggle of creating an edible meal is a constant struggle. I have always been a huge supporter of the grill at Kent, it serves as the lone hope of culinary diversity found in the dining hall. The endless supply of chicken after four years has completely turned me away from the "hot lunch". As a result, I constantly retreat to the grill and make a variety of cooked meats and blend sauces together in a last ditch effort to give my taste buds some sort of happiness. The dining hall is seriously lacking in their foods, but the grill serves as a route around the disgusting dining hall food.

  4. i agree with most of your argument. The food in the dinning hall has gotten a lot worse in my three years here. My main problem with the Kent dinning hall is that they have meals where everything is made with cheese and i hate cheese. on days like that i struggle to find food. i also hate the smell of the dinning hall that seems to stick to your clothes after lunch. I dont see a problem with left overs though. i actually love the variety that we get at Kent and think that as long as the food is still good, there is nothing wrong with left overs.
