In Robert Kenner’s 2008 film, Food Inc, I was amazed at where a majority of fast food comes from as well as the corruption behind in food system. This film was truly eye-opening to me and helped me formulate new thoughts not only on fast food, but food in general. If I had known what I know now, I definitely would not have eaten my McDonald’s burger over break. This film was spot on in its evaluation on the corruption and domination of the major food distributers in America. I was always a little skeptical about the government working so closely and passing laws to the FDA. As I have learned more and more about our system of government, it is amazing to see overlap with the same people serving on congress, then going to work for these major food companies. Tthe magnitude of corruption in our current system is much larger that I had initially thought. Seeing several farmers simply forced out of work by multi-billion dollar companies because they are producing the same crop was not only sad, but also disgusting. Overall, this film served as a major reality check to me of the atrocities going on behind the scenes of where we get our food.
I found it particularly interesting how Robert Kenner traced several brand name foods back to their source. His approach on finding the source of these major foods feeding Americans everyday allowed the viewer a much better perspective about what they are really consuming. I was not aware of the impact corn played in all of society and the mutations they have made to the role of corn. Watching the cows eat something unnatural to them and as a result produce meat that could be potentially poisonous really makes me more hesitant in my meat choice. However, the real value of this film came in its educational value, which has allowed me to reformulate my opinion on what I want to put into my body. It is clear that society is not fully aware of what they are consuming, but I have personally changed my point of view on what kinds of foods I now want to put inside my body. Since I have a nut allergy, I am drawn to read labels, but after seeing this film I know that I will check the labels for more than a nut product in the ingredients.
