In Robert Kenner’s Food Inc. produced in 2008, I was very surprised by the reality of the food we eat. I never knew that the system is so corrupted and depraved. We are eating food that is unhealthy, but none of the big companies that actually have the power to change things make efforts to improve the quality of the food. In fact, they try to hide their story behind and focus only on mass production and the profit it brings. I was ignorant of the things going on in the food industry before, but after watching the film, I have become more cautious in the choices of food.
One aspect of the movie that really amazed me was the fact that every food can be traced back to corn. In almost all of the products, even in some medicines, corn is included in the ingredients. Basically, corn has become the main food for other animals. Farmers feed corn to cows, chickens and pigs because corn not only is cheap, but also can force the animals to increase fat in a short period of time. According to the film, scientists are even trying to teach fish how to eat corn for the same reasons. However, people don’t realize the harmful effects. Cows’ natural food is grass, not corn. When they are forced to eat things that are not supposed to be eaten, cows itself become unhealthy and grow diseases such as e-coli.
When problems occur as a result of eating this harmful food, companies don’t even take responsibilities. The film portrays the cruel reality by telling the story of woman who lost her child. The child ate food that had e-coli bacteria and got the disease. The only thing the woman wanted from the company was an apology and a promise that they will make sure this will not happen again, but the company only made efforts to hide the case.
At the end, Food Inc. tells people of the growing trend towards organic food. This is good sign that people of becoming aware of the terrible situations in the food industry.
