Taste is a Waste

The alarm goes off. I get dressed. I go to breakfast. I make two five-inch by five-inch pancakes- a perfect pour of thin batter carpeted in chocolate chip cookies. Every morning at Kent School is the same for me. I eat the same delicious breakfast of champions, no matter how unhealthy it may be. Personally, I do not always consider the ramifications of eating such unhealthy food. Sure once in a while I throw in some greens and maybe a peanut butter sandwich to assure myself I am eating some sort of protein, but regularly I eat what I want to eat (then again I was never one to care.) However, after reading in Fast Food Nation, I clearly see the harsher truth behind the food companies and how there are many negative consequences to eating unhealthily. I think that one’s environment really does influence what they eat. Here at Kent, when I am pouring my pancake batter, I have no idea what kind it is or what is in it. For someone living with not a ton of money and who relies on fast food for their meals, it is essential to beware of what they consume. Unfortunately, many people who should, do not read labels or consider the repercussions of the harmful food they put in their mouths. It is difficult to determine how many people do or do not care about what they eat. On one hand, there are bunches of people, even at Kent, who diet and are anxious about their weight. On the other hand, America is one of the most obese nations in the world. It is important that people do not eat carelessly based on taste- there are serious issues and side effects that can change someone’s life forever because of one meal. A little boy lost his life from eating a hamburger. It proves that we can never be too sure about what we eat. Many foods can cause diabetes, which can result in at least seventeen years of life down the drain. It is scary what the simplest of foods can do to you, but with more and more chemicals and artificial substances being put into our food every day, we, as a world, need to be aware of what we consume and how much we consume. Even after reading and seeing films on the corrupt food system, I myself have been more cautious of what I eat. It is so easy to eat what I like, what tastes good. But, with the larger ramifications in perspective, it is worth it to eat healthier.
