The most surprising thing I learned in Food, Inc is that food companies can pass law to protect their privileges, like Monsanto monopoly on seeds. The company hunts down farmers who tries to save seeds/ saving the variety of seeds. It is impossible for farmers to take on multi-billion company like Monsanto. I am very disgusted on the fact that people like Clarence Thomas wrote the case that allows the companies to monopolize seeds. These people who used to work for the food companies end up in the white house, working for the government. Not to mention that these people are close to Bush and Clinton! Thus, this is really why these food monopolies can pass the laws to protect themselves. This only shows how corrupted the government and the food monopolies are. Another thing that surprised me is that Walmart is turning towards selling more organic food. Even though it is clear that the company did not turn towards organic food because of their concerns in Americans’ health. However, it is still a breakthrough because Walmart is one of the biggest “supermarkets” out there, which means there will be more organic farming. Hopefully, with Walmart leading the crowd and proving to other companies that organic farming can make money and sell organic food cheaply; more and more “supermarkets” will sell organic food, instead of industrialized food. This may very likely change the whole industrialized food trend and change the food habits of Americans. This is crucial because not only can it improve the Americans’ health, but it can also stop the inhuman treatments to the animals. While watching Food, Inc, I almost had no hope in the food industry. I thought there was no chance that the food industry can change because with companies having connections in government. However, I am delighted and hopeful after Walmart’s new approach. This is a huge step for the food industry and Americans towards better food, better health and better treatment towards animals.
