The movie Food Inc. by Robert Kenner produced 2008 talks about how food is produced and sold in the U.S. The most surprising things I saw in the movie where the fact that federal agencies like the FDA who were supposed to check and control meat companies and other food producers were prevented from doing their job because the companies sued them for doing their job. Because of them not being to do their job it caused many bacteria’s to get into the meat and make people sick and sometimes die. Another aspect that shocked me was that the companies hired illegal immigrants and would call the Immigration polices on them when they needed to get rid of them; punishing innocent workers so that the company doesn’t get into trouble. That is another thing that seemed to make no sense to me; the fact that every one knows that the companies hire the immigrants and not hold management accountable for too. In addition to all this is the ridiculous power some companies in the U.S. one example is the soy bean production companies Manon that produced a bean that would survive pesticides by means of genetic integrating. Because they invented this bean they had all rights reserved for them; because of that the company’s wants to prevent farmers from reusing their sees making farmers buy every year’s new seeds. To prevent that from happening the companies owns their own investigation team make up of experienced combat personal to intimidate the people to search for farmers keeping seeds, preventing free farming. Lastly there is the fact that some people who used to work for food companies got into government controlling agencies like the FDA and other ones.
When I saw the movie and found out about all the things that stand above I was surprised at how bad the system is. That the government allows food companies to have so much power and to let itself be influenced by those people resulting in the hindering of agencies that are supposed to protect the people from bad things. It is in my eyes ridiculous that such a thing is allowed to happen and that the government doesn’t really do anything to stop it.
